Pop music is an ample and precise category of modern music not defined by its artistic consideration but by its potential audience or prospective market. The main characteristic of pop music is that anyone can enjoy it. Its main objective is the enjoyment of the audience and its commercial success. The term pop is an abbreviation of popular music which is antithesis to classical music.
Previous generations enjoyed vintage music but the new generation wants to hear fast tracks. The advent of television channels like MTV and V brought a wave of English hot tracks into the country. A lot of western cassettes and LPs flowed into the music market. Even Indian students studying abroad started to enjoy English music. Singers, song writers and other folk based artists all the contributed to the success of music in the first half of the decade. In 1960 the famous band ‘Beatles’ got attracted to the spiritual atmosphere of India. Later music of Boney M, Carpenters, Cliff Richards, Abba and Eagles came to Indian shores. The main influence in the second half of the eighties decade came from disco beats. It was also the decade of female pop artists. A new generation of singers like Madonna, Eminen, Shakira, Sting, The Spice Girls, Enigma and most of all Michel Jackson, all contributed to the craze of English pop songs. More changes came with the invention of multi-track tape recorder permitting completely electronic studio recordings for the first time.
Pop truly became international in the 90’s with hits coming from diverse and distant locations. With internet music is popular globally. Latin American singers like Maccrena, Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez became popular in India. Indian radio channel produces English top ten hits depending on their popularity. MTV and V also telecast the latest Billboard hits.
