Film songs serve a variety of purposes. Studded at intervals throughout the story they make a more telling statement than mere dialogues. The songs can be both entertaining and enlightening. They can fill a flat story with spice and color. In fact hit songs written by legendary poets and lyricists have contributed to making a blockbuster. It was because of their creativity that songs have been appreciated worldwide. They are the very soul of the song. A good tune cannot be composed without meaningful lyrics. Award wining songs have been translated into other languages also. Most of the lyrics are about love and are inspired from ancient texts which extol the relationship of lovers.

Songs written in the golden age of
Indian films like ‘Dekh tere sansar ki halat kya ho gai bhagwan’, ‘aao bachon tumhe dikhaye jhanki hindustan ki’, penned by yesteryear poet Pradeep are benchmarks for budding film poets. Bharat Vyas wrote the immortal song ‘ae malik tere bande hum’. Other lyricists were Shakeel Badayuni, Kafi Azmi, Sahir Ludhainvi, Shailendra, Anand Bakshi, Gulzar and Javed Akhtar who created magic. Unforgettable songs like ‘mora gora ang liele’ from Bandini and ‘thujhse naraz nahi zindagai’ from Masoom by Gulzar are still played on countdown programs.
A new breed of young lyricists has entered Bollywood continuing the tradition. ‘Ya Ali,’ from Gangster and Misra who wrote ‘Jadoo hai nasha hai,’ for Jism are in the mould of previous Bollywood lyricists. ‘Kal ho na ho’, ‘ek ladki ko dekha to aisa laga,’ ‘sandeshe ate hai, have enthralled music lovers.
