A patriotic song is one which demonstrates love and affection for one’s country, culture or homeland. This devotion and love led to the making of patriotic films and songs known as ‘desh bhakti geet’ during India’s struggle for freedom. Common themes include love of country or glorify self sacrifice others focus on land’s beauty, history or values. Indian cinema has played an important part in uplifting the feeling of nationalism among the citizens of the country. Despite the diversity, all Indians are united as patriotic fervour is displayed when such songs are sung.
‘Sare jahan se aacha,’ ‘Ai mere payare vatan,’ ‘Ai vatan ai vatan,’ ’Ai mere vatan ke logon,’ ‘Aao baccho tumhe dikhaye’ are some of the songs that had a tremendous impact on educated and illiterate masses. When freedom dawned on 15th August 1947, the film industry celebrated this historic moment through the songs about the greatness of India. Manoj Kumar was one of the best actor-directors of his time who made films that carried the message of patriotism. His film ‘Shaheed’ in 1965 contained the immortal song ‘mera rang de basanti chola’ which was first of the series. ‘Hai preet jahan ki reet’ from ‘Purab aur Paschim’ was another hit that was in praise of the country. ‘Vande Matram’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar penned by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay still remains one of the best unbeatable tunes. ‘Ma tujhe salaam, by A R Rahman sung on India’s 50th Independence Day still remains one of the best tunes by the young music composer.
Patriotism and Indian music have blended together in countless melodies. No matter what the mood maybe they help in stimulating the pure feelings whenever you hear them. Patriotism is like a string that joins and unites Indians and not like a scissors that cuts and divides.
