The history of radio is the history of technology. Experimentation with radio in India began in 1915 which led to the development of radio we know today. All India Radio officially known as ‘Akashvani’ is the broadcaster of India. It is one of the largest radio networks in the world.
The re-launch of the Radio FM has revolutionized the music world, in India. FM, i.e. Frequency Modulation is largely responsible for this shift. It conveys information over carrier wave by varying its frequency and the signal transcends against noise and interference. Radio entertainment was revived with the launch of Radio Mirchi in the year 2000. Following suit, seven FM channels owned by different media groups, like STAR Network to Reliance Entertainment, were launched. The FM channels give listeners its daily doze of hits and entertainment. From latest Bollywood hits to old classics, from Indipop to English rock, the radio covers them all! Some of the most popular channels ones are Radio Mirchi, Radio City and Radio One. Fever 104 is another leading channel. It plays Hindi as well as English music in a row, for 40 minutes, without any commercial break.
The FM hits play almost throughout the day on different radio channels. The hits are decided by many considerations – right from the public demand, the number of downloads and the music reviews, to the sales of the music albums in the market, many such factors are at play in deciding the destiny of a song or an album.
The hit songs keep exchanging places, fighting to keep their positions. The FM hits encourage people to buy the music they like. After listening to the hit music many times over, one can decide to buy the album. It is up to the RJs to make music rock on the FM and make driving in peak traffic a great stress buster!
